What's the role of the gabion mesh in embank and slope protection?

Gabion mesh has a long-lasting corrosion resistance property, and can be used for mountain, river, wetland borders, coastlines and other geological structures. It can sustainedly protect the slope and provide a stable living environment for the healthy growth of plants.

Gabion structure

(1) Gabion mesh pad. Gabion mesh pad is a kind of cage structure with the thickness of 0.15 ~ 0.30 m. Mainly used as river and bank slope protection, it will help prevent river from damage caused by water flowing, wind and waves hit, and also maintain the natural convection switching capabilities between the water body and the soil under the slope to achieve the ecological balance; not only protect the bank and slope, but also add the green landscape.

(2) Gabion retaining wall. Gabion retaining wall is a kind of retaining wall structure stacked by steel mesh cages with the thickness of 0.5 ~ 1.0 m. It's used in river bank protection and steep bank&slope protection instead of masonry and concrete. It also achieve the vegetation greening, and ecological environmental protection.

 

Gabion revetment features and functions:

(1) better ecological. As the large gap of gabion, if only simply use gabion, it is easy to form  a dry and arid environment that plants can not grow. Therefore, in order to enable the growth of plants at an early date, you should soil the gabion or fill gaps of it, and can not passively wait for sediment deposition caused by flooding. The best way is to use micro-organisms and a variety of organisms. In the long years of processing, it will form the loose topsoil with rich nutrient ingredients and achieve the goal of natural cycle of the perennial herbs .

(2) strong permeability. The retaining wall stacked by gabions, has more pores due to the loose filler body in the gabion which can fully guarante the water exchange and regulatory functions between the banks and the river water. It can detent flood,supply water, adjust water levels, enhance the self-purification capacity of water, and is conductive to the water discharge of the masonry soil, thereby reduce underground water pressure behind the wall. At the same time, once the the surface water sank into the wall soil, it can quickly discharge through the masonry, and effectively lower the water table.

(3) better erosion resistance. Hexagonal mesh gabion, used in slope protection or retaining wall, has good structural integrity. According to the related experiment, it proved that the scour prevention coefficient of hexagonal wire mesh gabion protection works is two times of the genetal riprap protection works. When the ripped-rock revetment was lashed by the water flow and the stone was compressed, once produced an initial move and the soil of the bank slope was washed away, the whole protective works would be destoryed. However, even if the stone in the gabion mat moved, this time the deformed gabion mat structure will be adjusted and reach a new equilibrium, but the whole will not be destroyed, so it can effectively protect the bank slope and prevent the soil from destoryed.

(4) better wave resistance. Because there are certain filling gaps in the rock cage, when waves and the crest of it lapped the cage, the spray was crushed and reducing the impact of the wave pressure. When the storms, crest withdraw, because of the gaps in the cages, it damaged the vacuum suction of the waves and also reduced the intensity of destruction of the protective works. Coupled with the overall structure which can be fine-tuned under the storm force, it avoided the shortcomings of the cracks in the walls.

(5) good flexibility. The raw material of gabion mesh can be film coating hot dip galvanized low-carbon steel wire. The steel wire with a certain intensity, is not easy to be drawn off, and the overall strength of the cages is high. The characteristic of low-carbon steel wire to withstand a moderate deformation can connect the whole projects into a whole, without parting, even if one wire of the structure is broken for some reason, it will not affect the integrity of the structure. Particularly in the case of foundation soil subsidence or a small deformation of the soil behind wall, the structure can be self-adaptively fine-tuned and will not generate subsidence seams caused by uneven subsidence, the whole structure will not be destroyed.
